This 1 day workshop is an introduction into the technique of copper foiling glass.  Copper foiling is the alternative to the traditional leaded glass windows we are mostly familiar with.  The technique where copper foil is wrapped around glass and then solder used to join the glass together, was adopted by Louis Comfort Tiffany allowing him to create more intricate designs seen in his windows and ‘Tiffany’ lamps.  Copper foiling is an adaptable method of creating all sorts of art in glass from large scale panels to smaller decorative suncatchers, in fact once you learn how to copper foil the only boundary is your imagination!

In this festive workshop you will make a Christmas tree that could be used as part of a festive table display or a star to hang in the window, if time allows there will be the opportunity to make some tree hangings.

The course will start with an introduction to the tools of the job and then the scary part of learning how to cut the glass!  There will be plenty of clear glass to practise on to start with, once confident there will be a selection of wonderful colourful and textured glass to choose for the final piece. Next comes the copper foiling of the glass which is best described as wrapping the edges of the glass with sticky tape.  The copper foil is then soldered around in order to join all the pieces together creating a sturdy metal framework for your glass.

This workshop will give you a taste of the skills you need to learn a new craft and the knowledge to pursue the hobby further at home.

This course is suitable for beginners, but good manual dexterity is essential.  All materials are supplied but students should bring an apron, clothes suitable for a workshop and most importantly sensible shoes, no flip flops or sandals!  It would also be useful to bring sketchbooks and coloured pencils.

There is lots of information online about stained glass should you wish to do homework before the workshop, everythingstainedglass.com has lots of useful tutorials to help you get an idea of what’s involved.

This workshop is being taught by Helen Fonnereau Glass who has over 15 years’ experience working with glass and has a BA Hons in Study of Art from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.  Come find me on Facebook Helen Fonnereau Glass or Instagram Helenglassworks
